What is GAT General?

GAT General Test Preparation is important for the students who are seeking admission in MS/M.Phil. programs in any Pakistani University after the sixteen years of education. GAT is the short form of Graduate Assessment Test and it is categorized as General because it is applicable to all type of disciplines for admissions in MS/M.Phil. National Testing Service (NTS) conducts the GAT General Test 4 to 5 times in a year.

.There are two types of GAT General Test, first is GAT General and second is GAT Special. The result of GAT General is acceptable by all universities for two years on the other hand GAT Special is conducted on the special request of the universities that is why the result of GAT Special test is only acceptable, for one year, by the university on whom request the test is conducted by the NTS.

Validity of GAT General Test
  1. The test result of GAT General remain valid for 2 years for admissions and scholarships.
  2. The test result of GAT Special test remain valid for 1 year.
What are the Passing Marks of GAT General Test?

The passing marks of GAT Test are 50. However higher score helps students to get higher merit in the merit list. And it also depends on the admission policy of each university how much weightage they give the GAT General test score in calculating admission merit.

Why Students Fail in GAT General Test?

Most of the students appear in the GAT General test without knowing the syllabus, test pattern, test dates and marking system that results in waste of a complete year with no admission. It is very important for the students to know all the information related to the test.

Total Number of MCQs and Total Marks of GAT General Test
  1. GAT Tests includes 100 MCQs and each MCQ is of 1 mark.
  2. Total no of Questions = 100
  3. Time allowed for the test = 2 hours (120 minutes)
Syllabus/Parts/Portions of GAT General Test Preparation

GAT General Test Includes the following four parts of contents:

  1. Analytical reasoning
  2. Logical Reasoning
  3. Quantitative reasoning 
  4. Verbal reasoning

Although Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are the only contents of the GAT General test but their weightage is different in different disciplines. There are four categories of GAT General Test (GAT-A, GAT-B, GAT-C, GAT-D) based on the weightage given to the different portions of the contents.

What is my GAT General Test Category?

Following is the distribution of contents in different categories of GAT General Test:

GAT-A

This category is for candidates with backgrounds in Business and Engineering. The test will have 35% questions on English/Verbal reasoning, 30% on Analytical reasoning, and 35% on Quantitative reasoning. The total marks for the test will be 100, and candidates should prepare accordingly.

GAT-B

This category is for candidates with backgrounds in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The test will have 50% questions on English/Verbal reasoning, 20% on Analytical reasoning, and 30% on Quantitative reasoning. The total marks for the test will be 100, and candidates should prepare accordingly.

GAT-C

This category is for candidates with backgrounds in Agriculture, veterinary, Biological & Related Science. The test will have 45% questions on English/Verbal reasoning, 20% on Analytical reasoning, and 35% on Quantitative reasoning. The total marks for the test will be 100, and candidates should prepare accordingly.

GAT-D

This category is specially designed for students coming from Madrassa background (Shadat-Ul-Aalmiya) or equivalent having equivalence from Higher Education Commission (HEC) and desired to seek admission in M. Phil/MS/LLM disciplines. This category of test includes 50% questions on English/Verbal reasoning, 20% on Analytical reasoning, and 30% on Quantitative reasoning. The total marks for the test will be 100, and candidates should prepare accordingly.

GAT General Test Verbal Reasoning Portion

Verbal reasoning part of GAT Test, tests the students’ English comprehension, grammatical knowledge and vocabulary with regards to its correct usage. Following are the different types of questions that are asked in the GAT General Verbal Reasoning Portion.

  5. Antonyms

  7. Correct use of verbs

GAT General Quantitative Reasoning Portion Preparation

Quantitative reasoning portion in GAT General is commonly known as math portion. This portion includes the basic math questions but it requires practice to solve questions fast due to time limitations and somewhat different from the usual long methods. The questions are based on the following types:

GAT General Analytical Reasoning Portion Preparation

Analytical reasoning tests how well candidates can make logical conclusions based on facts. In these questions, a scenario is given in a passage, also called a statement, along with four or five rules that explain or limit the information in the passage. Then, students are asked a few (usually 4 to 5 MCQs) questions about it, and sometimes new rules are added to those questions. Students need to answer by considering all the given information and rules to arrive at a logical conclusion.

GAT General Logical Reasoning Portion Preparation

Logical Reasoning requires the same skill and effort that is required to solve Analytical Reasoning questions. Logical reasoning questions do not give any scenario instead these questions have a statement and only one question is asked from that statement. These questions are a bit difficult because to solve these type of questions students must have good English comprehension skills.
